How automotive air conditioning systems works is straightforward. They help keep your INFINITI car or SUV's cabin cool during a drive. How they do that happens in four parts.

How INFINITI AC Systems Work

  • First, a compressor pressurizes liquid refrigerant, changing it into a hot gas.
  • Second, a condenser chills the gas, turning it back into a fluid.
  • Third, a thermal expansion valve downstream from the system's receiver drier/dryer draws in the fluid, during which it returns to a gaseous state again, although at a lower pressure.
  • Finally, an evaporator and a cooling fan rapidly lower the gas's temperature. The cold air that results travels through your vehicle's ducts, out its vents, and into the cabin.
  • How to Spot AC System Issues

Unfortunately, a car's air conditioning system can develop problems from time to time. For instance, its seals can weaken, often just from use and age. Its hoses can also degrade and break. Even the AC compressor can go bad. Luckily, there are signs to tell you what's happening:

  • If your air conditioner isn't cooling properly/is blowing hot air. This can mean leaking refrigerant or low levels of it.
  • If the temperature's higher than normal in the cabin, you hear strange noises during AC operation, or the compressor clutch is stuck. These can mean a bad compressor.
  • If frost is building up, the AC button on your instrumentation is flashing, your HVAC warning light is lit, or you've got discharge pressure issues. This can mean a bad AC condenser.
