The alternator in your INFINITI vehicle, also called a generator, is a main part of its charging system. It turns mechanical energy into electrical energy -- in other words, motion into electricity. Put simply, it generates current.

How An INFINITI Alternator Works

It does that by an equally simple process: your engine runs serpentine and drive belts, which move a pulley, which turns a rotor shaft, which spins some magnetic coils. A rectifier captures the energy that the movement creates as AC power, and it transforms it into DC power. A voltage regulator manages the resulting charge.

In short, alternators help charge the battery in cars, run their dashboard lights and displays, and power other electrical systems and accessories, from entertainment systems and windows to steering and windshield wipers. They can even help keep options like heated seats working.

How to Spot a Faulty Alternator

Unfortunately, an alternator can sometimes go bad. Its failure can be caused by everything from a belt that's too tight to installing incompatible accessories, jump-starting incorrectly, and worn or damaged parts. You can try to avoid it by keeping an eye out for signs of problems and replacing the alternator if inspection and charging system test results call for it. Those symptoms include:

  • Alternator and battery warning lights on the dash
  • Lighting malfunctions
  • A car entertainment system that only works intermittently
  • A burning smell near the battery or alternator
  • Leaking alternator fluid
  • A squealing engine
  • A dead battery
  • General electrical system failure
  • Otherwise, be sure to change the alternator either every 7 years or every 80,000 to 150,000 miles, whichever comes first.
