The job of your INFINITI vehicle's drive shaft (also called a drivetrain, propeller shaft, or prop shaft) is to transfer torque from its from transmission to the differential. Put simply, it turns torque and engine rotation into motion, moving many parts under the hood.

There are four kinds, front-wheel drive being the commonest. FWD systems move vehicles using their front wheels primarily, every part is installed up front, and constant velocity (CV) joints connect all parts to a differential.

Rear-wheel drive is another type. RWD systems mainly use vehicles' back wheels to move them. Here, drive shafts link up with transmissions and differentials via universal (U) joints.

Four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are the last two kinds. In a 4WD and AWD system, every wheel helps move a vehicle. Both use a pair of drive shafts. One is up front, and U-joints connect it to both the front differential and the transfer case.

Whatever sort of drive shaft your INFINITI model has, sooner or later, it'll get old, at which point, it can start to fail. Fortunately, a bad drive shaft has telltale signs that you can look for. For instance:

  • A shuddering underbody, loud clunks when shifting, and problems turning: these can indicate wear to a U-joint or coupler, that is, if either or both haven't gone bad already. They can also indicate bad carrier bearings.
  • Intense vibration when speeding up: this can indicate a loose U-joint.
  • Clicks or knocks: this can indicate CV joint wear or failure.
  • In any of these cases, damage often only gets worse. Luckily, our auto parts store is here to help.
