What INFINITI Exhaust Systems Do
They safely remove the noxious byproducts created when the engine in your INFINITI car or suv burns fuel. More specifically, they capture what's harmful before releasing much cleaner gases into the air. That helps keep you and your passengers safe, and it's better for the environment. They even help muffle the noise the process makes.
How INFINITI Exhaust Systems Work
There are several stages. Generally, it follows this order:
- Pollutants pass through a catalytic converter, where metals like platinum, rhodium, and palladium capture toxic molecules, contain them, and separate them into oxygen and nitrogen. They trap the nitrogen and let the oxygen go through, also burning up hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide in the process. In the end, what they release is basically water vapor and carbon dioxide.
- An exhaust manifold collects the gases, sending them down an exhaust pipe. In the meantime, a resonator and muffler reduce engine noise while optimizing airflow.
- The muffler's tail pipe releases the cleaner fumes into the air.
Unfortunately, no exhaust system lasts forever. Fortunately, if yours is going bad or has failed, there are signs.
When to Repair or Replace an Exhaust
Signs of exhaust problems include:
- Worsening fuel economy
- Strange noises coming from your exhaust pipe or muffler
- The odor of rotten eggs
- A lit Check Engine light
If you experience any of these, conduct a full inspection to figure out which, if any, of your exhaust parts is the culprit. Otherwise, typically, catalytic converters last up to 100,000 miles, while mufflers and resonators last 2 to 4 years.
