The intake valves regulate the air and fuel that the engine burns to produce power, while the exhaust valves manage the engine's fumes, and the valve covers help protect both sets of valves. The camshaft, however, coordinates the valves' activities, while the cylinder head seals the engine off against both gas and oil escaping. The pistons pump to compress the oxygen and gas and make more energy available for combustion, and the spark plugs ignite that mix; it burns, generating said power. The crankshaft, though, transforms said power into rotary motion, which the drive shaft and transmission use to turn the wheels and tires. Finally, the oil sump/pan stores the motor oil used to lubricate it all.
