All About INFINITI FX35 Serpentine Belts
The serpentine belt in your luxury mid-size SUV is a single belt that moves and therefore powers the vehicle's engine's many accessories. However, it's not the same thing as the timing belt.
Serpentine belts drive engine parts such as the alternator, plus the power steering pump, water pump, the compressor in your air conditioning system, and the air pump, among other components. Plus, they work with crankshaft pulleys and alongside idler pulleys and/or belt tensioners sometimes. Timing belts, on the other hand, have the job of synchronizing crankshafts and camshafts.
Unfortunately, heat and friction can eventually cause a serpentine belt to wear out, and that'll invariably cause other problems. Experiencing air conditioner malfunctions or a loss of power steering? Is the battery in your crossover dead, or is its engine overheating? Do you see engine accessories damage? If so, the belt may need to be replaced. You should do it regularly anyway, upon inspection every 60,000 miles as needed or every 90,000 miles at most -- namely, well before it breaks, and your vehicle's many systems stop working.
To figure out if it's time, do said visual inspection, looking for the textbook symptoms of a bad one. They include:
- Cracks and/or fraying
- Glazing
- Squealing or chirping (indicating belt slippage)
- Power steering failure
- A sudden battery drain
- A stalling engine
- A lit Check Engine light on the dash
