INFINITI Induction Parts 101

Air induction systems, also called air intake systems, are critical engine parts. They work with intake manifolds to evenly distribute oxygen, necessary for combustion, to all cylinders, also helping to cool them in the process.

The Parts Of An INFINITI Induction System

Several components factor into how an induction system determines how much air to use. One is a mass airflow sensor; it's found on the throttle body, located near the air filter box, and it helps control air levels. Another is the air metering system; in gas engines, it provides feedback on those levels, sending it to an engine control unit (ECU). Yet another is the oxygen sensor system; it helps regulate air levels in the exhaust and tells the engine when to adjust fuel use. Together, they help keep the engine running properly.

During the process, an engine air filter helps keep airborne pollutants from getting into the combustion chambers. If it's located outside the engine bay, above a wheel well or near a fender, it makes it a cold air intake, capable of drawing in cooler and denser air and thereby slightly improving engine horsepower and torque. Add a heat shield, and you can keep both the intake and the surrounding air even cooler.

How To Spot A Faulty Induction System

Unfortunately, an induction system can develop problems from time to time. Luckily, there are two main signs of them. One is a lit "Check Engine" dash light. Of course, this is a common alert, so you'll want to connect a code reader to determine if your induction system is the source of your troubles.

The other is high idle -- when a vehicle revs too fast in park or neutral or its idle speed increases or decreases drastically. The first indicates subpar engine performance. The second usually indicates induction system failure. If you see either symptom, run an inspection and do immediate repairs.
